Think about the two different demonstrations that took place outside this week.

First, explain what we did in the first ditch. Tell about the landforms you saw being formed. Explain how you knew what you were seeing. (example: A valley was formed because a low place between the two mountains was formed.)

Next, the second paragraph will tell about what we did in the ditch at the top of the hill and what you learned.

You will be graded on whether you used all of the vocabulary words correctly and if you followed the directions to form two paragraphs with topic sentences and concluding sentences and had all required information.

Use the following vocabulary in 2 well written paragraphs. Be sure to include an explanation of how you know each of the things you learned. You may type it here or write on a separate sheet of notebook paper. You will have 2 days to work on it before turning it in.
erosion sediment meander canyon delta
river basin deposition slope dam lake

We did two different things today. I like to call the first one,''Journey Along the River. First, Mrs. Greenslade, made a mountain. We watched the water flow as she poured it over the mountain. The pressure of the water caused erosion. Erosion is when earth material is worn away by wind or rain. As we watched the river slope faster, we started to see sediment depositing itself along the river bank. Sediment is small earth particles that settle mostly out on the banks of rivers. The erosion on the mountain caused a canyon to form. A canyon is a deep valley that has mostly jagged edges. As the river moved on we saw meanders. Meanders are slow turns in a river. Then, a basin decided to form in the side of our mountain. A basin is a sudden low spot shaped almost like a bowl [ have you ever heard of the Nashville Basin?]. There was a lot of deposition on the river bed. Deposition is small earth materials that have settled along the river bed. A dam was formed by the sediment piling up and stopping the flow of water. Then, that caused a lake to form. That is the end of my, ''Journey Along the River''.

On the second thing, we basically did the same thing as we did on the first activity. Except this time we did something on the river channel. We made dams! No ones dam held! A couple stopped the flow a little, but the water either went around or through the little cracks in it. There was plenty of sediment and deposition, but not many meanders. We used all earth materials on our dams. that is what we did on the second activity.
